The List of National Historic Landmarks (NHL) and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) are the official listings of the nation’s most historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s List of National Historic Landmarks and National Register of Historic Places are both part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.
At the end of 2023, there were over 2,600 National Historic Landmarks across the United States, with only 28 iconic buildings identified in Iowa, and only one of those landmarks is located in Johnson County. Of course, it’s an obvious choice:
