The List of National Historic Landmarks (NHL) and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) are the official listings of the nation’s most historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s List of National Historic Landmarks and National Register of Historic Places are both part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources. At the end of 2023, there were more than 98,000 properties listed in the National Register, with 94 of those historic places located in Johnson County, Iowa. Here in Iowa City, the Historic Preservation Commission, along with the assistance of the city’s preservation planner, reviews requests for exterior changes to properties located within the local historic districts and conservation districts (see below), and historic landmarks. Beginning in 1975, one of Iowa City’s oldest landmarks – North Presbyterian Church – was the first to be designated as a Historic Landmark in Iowa City (ICHL).
