National Historic Landmarks & Historic Places.

The List of National Historic Landmarks (NHL) and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) are the official listings of the nation’s most historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s List of National Historic Landmarks and National Register of Historic Places are both part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.

At the end of 2023, there were over 2,600 National Historic Landmarks across the United States, with only 28 iconic buildings identified in Iowa, and only one of those landmarks is located in Johnson County. Of course, it’s an obvious choice:

As for the National Register of Historic Places, at the end of 2024, there were more than 98,000 properties listed in the National Register, with 95 of those historic places located in Johnson County, Iowa. May 31, 1972 – Old Capitol in Iowa City becomes the first building in Johnson County to be designated on the National Register of Historic Places.
