June 25, 1839 – Chauncey Swan is given the unenviable assignment of Acting Commissioner of the building project for Iowa’s new capitol building.
In May 1839, Chauncey Swan and his team picked the exact spot where the new Iowa capitol building would be built, marking it with a wooden stake, and then, Swan returned back home to Dubuque. But wait! Swan was not done with his involvement with Iowa City! By June 25, 1839 – he was given – what turned out to be – the unenviable task of Acting Commissioner of the capitol building project!
