June 26, 2003 – The Iowa City Press-Citizen announces the passing of former mayor Susan Horowitz – Iowa City’s 66th mayor.
After fourteen years as an independent community with no ties to Territorial or State government, in 1853, the people of Iowa City voted to officially become an incorporated city. With that decision, came city government and our first city mayor and city council. Since then – over our 172-year-history as an incorporated city – Iowa City has had 65 different mayors serving 73 separate terms! Come read about Mayor #66 – Susan Horowitz!
