January 20, 1869 – Mark Twain’s lecture in Iowa City is completely panned by The Iowa City Republican!

When Mark Twain comes to Iowa City to present his latest lecture – The American Vandal Abroad, Metropolitan Hall is packed, but apparently Twain’s presentation was less than impressive…

As a lecture it was a humbug … We were very much disappointed that there was so little substance to his lecture. We would not give two cents to hear him again. Iowa City Republican – January 20, 1869
