December 7, 1906The Daily Iowan announces the SUI Military Cadet Band’s first concert held in the new Armory on the SUI Campus.

Henry Givin Cox was the first director/bandmaster of the SUI military band. He was also invited to be the School of Music’s first instructor of violin and orchestral instruments. For two years (1906-1908), Cox served in these roles, finding great success with his work – doubling the size of the SUI military band to fifty-seven members in his first year!

In the article (above), Cox states: “The State University of Iowa can boast of a great cadet band. It is able to compete successfully with any Amateur Military Band in the West.”
