December 6, 1838 – Johnson County pioneer Cyrus Sanders leaves Oxford, Ohio, taking a stagecoach to Cincinnati, where, on the next day, he boards an Ohio River steamboat with only $100 in his pocket.

In December 1838, Cyrus Sanders left Ohio, taking a stagecoach to Cincinnati, where, on the next day, he boarded an Ohio River steamboat. Over the next five years (1838-1843), in his journal, Sanders gives us a day-by-day account of one man’s pioneering trek – relocating from Ohio to Johnson County, Iowa.
