June 17, 1673 – French explorers – Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet are the first Europeans to arrive at the Mississippi River, setting eyes on land that will eventually become known as Iowa.

Eight days later (June 25), Marquette & Joliet crossed the Mississippi, becoming the first Europeans to set foot here.
