June 6, 1839 – After starting his newspaper in Ft. Madison, editor James G. Edwards publishes his first edition of The Iowa Patriot in Burlington.

Edwards relocated to Burlington to bring some head-to-head competition to James Clarke – renaming his paper, in the fall of 1839 – The Burlington Hawk-eye. Today, The Hawk-eye is still in publication, billing itself as “Iowa’s oldest newspaper.”
