June 5, 1912 – The Iowa City Daily Press announces that our city’s newest semi-pro baseball team will be named the Iowa City Gold Sox!
Did you know that Iowa City has had a variety of baseball clubs over the years? The Iowa City Neversweats, for example, were one of the top teams in Iowa during the mid-1880’s. And then, there were the Iowa City Gold Sox who played in Rundell Park in 1912. While the 1912 Gold Sox fared well on the field, the cash box didn’t do likewise, so by 1913, the Sox were purchased by Iowa City’s well-known cigar salesman – Fred Racine – becoming the Racine Ramblers.
