October 27, 2016 – Iowa City historian Sue Rhomberg publishes her story celebrating Iowa City’s first registered architect – Henry L. Fisk.
In 2024/2025, the Iowa City Airport Commission looks to expand and update its aging facilities, and one idea is to replace the iconic Administration Building & Terminal with a new, larger building. Designed by Iowa City’s famed architect – Henry L. Fisk – the Airport Terminal opened in 1953, so today, our hope is to find a creative way to preserve the past while looking ahead to the future. Come join the conversation.

I believe I have mentioned this before. Fisk was also in partnership with an architect whose last name was Ruth; Fisk and Ruth. Ruth seems to be missing from this narrative, or I am a sloppy reader. Anyway, my father used this firm to design our house (1941) and also for Hotel Jefferson remodeling projects. The Huddle Coffee Shop, for instance.
Hey David. Haven’t dug too deep into his practice so wasn’t aware of another partner prior to Roland Wehner in the later 1950’s. You got any old paperwork or records that can give me more info on any of those projects? or on “Ruth”?

Henry Fisk’s wife was named Ruth. She was in my grandmother’s bridge club.
Thanks Sean. Now, I remember a detail Fisk’s partner Roland Wehner gave me: “As far as I know, Fisk was not superstitious, but he did share one curiosity with me. He had at one time a partner whose last name was Ruth; Henry’s wife was named Ruth; the wife of his best friend, Jack Swaner, was Ruth, Swaners had a daughter named Ruthie, and their son, Jim, married a girl named Ruth; the wife of his banker friend Albert Droll was named Ruth; and my wife’s maiden name was Marilyn Ruth Duke.”

Dear David,
In the 1936 Iowa City Public Directory there is a listing for “Fisk & Ruth (Henry L. Fisk. Paul C. Ruth) archts 5 1/2 W Davenport”
thanks Annie for the info.
