Iowa City’s – U.S. Land Office

August 8, 1846 – President James K. Polk authorizes a new U.S. Land Office – which opens in Iowa City in November.

In 1846, as Iowa’s soon-to-be capital city, Iowa City prepared itself to become the focal point where not only the state government met, but the city where everyone who was buying or investing in Iowa land had to come to make those financial transactions. On August 8th, President James K. Polk approved a new U.S. Land Office in Iowa, and by November it had opened in Iowa City.
