Iowa City’s Banking Corner.

June 29, 1863 – Bank reform continues as the First National Bank in Davenport opens for business two days before any other national bank in the U.S.

The National Panic of 1857 – combined with the move of the state’s capital to Des Moines – caused an economic crisis across Iowa City, which included the closure of our city’s largest bank – Cook, Sargent & Downey, with its main offices in Davenport.
