WSUI – Iowa City & EKKO Radio Stamps.

June 26, 1922 – WSUI in Iowa City – the oldest educational station west of the Mississippi River – began airing local voice broadcasts in 1919, and in June 1922, the station, known then as WHAA, is granted a full license by the U.S. government to begin broadcast tests.

By the Roaring Twenties, there were many new and exciting pastimes that captured the attention of Americans. EKKO – a small marketing company in Chicago – had the brilliant idea of taking two of those themes – listening to radio and stamp collecting – and make a promotion that quickly became a national craze. From 1924 to 1930, EKKO Radio Stamps featured over 800 radio stations across North America, including Iowa City’s two radio stations – WSUI and KFQP!
