May 8, 1689.

Iowa: The Discovery 1673-1803.

May 8, 1689 – Explorer Nicholas Perrot claims possession of the Mississippi River valley for France.

Of course, as we acknowledge today, this vast land was inhabited by numerous Native American tribes who had a “claim” to it long before any Europeans arrived. Regardless, in the early 1700’s, the French attempted to draw up maps of this expansive region – calling it Louisiana.
