May 7, 1935 – The 46th General Assembly signs a bill providing for 53 patrol officers to join The Iowa Safety Patrol, and the bill is signed into law by Governor Clyde L. Herring.
There were 3,000 applications for safety school, with 100 applicants chosen for training at Camp Dodge. Qualifications included the following: Height at least 5 feet, 10 inches, Vision 20-20, uncorrected. While in training, applicants were paid $40.00 per month. Iowa Highway Safety Patrol patrolled roads for the first time July 28, 1935.

I heard a lot about the Red Ball Highway as a kid. Robert N was still alive and often talked about it when the family was gathered. I think it was his greatest accomplishment.
