January 11, 1805 – Michigan Territory is established by an act of the United States Congress – effective June 30 of that year.
Did you know that for a short time – June 1834- July 1836 – the “unorganized” territory that included Iowa, Minnesota, and the Dakotas was adopted into the existing Michigan Territory (Michigan and Wisconsin), with Detroit as the capital – see maps above.
