Welcome To Iowa City – June 1887.

On Tuesday, June 21, 1887, The Iowa City Republican issued an eight-page salute to Iowa City – a classic overview of our fair city as it was so very long ago. You can see the decorative front page here. Now, here’s page three – which offers a fairly extensive overview of Iowa City’s manufacturing companies, plus a look at the booming livestock businesses of Johnson County…

The first manufacturing companies of Johnson County were mills constructed near dams built on the Iowa River. Read more here about Walter Terrell’s dam & mill (1843), and the mill and dam located in today’s Coralville (1844).

The Close & Company building (above) – located at 521 S. Gilbert Street – was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 12, 1984, but removed in 1995 after major changes were made to the building.
