(C-0277) U.S. #183 1879 2¢ Jackson American Bank Note Printing (Earliest Known Use: August 18, 1878); U.S. #186 1879 6¢ Lincoln American Bank Note Printing (Earliest Known Use: April 18, 1879); U.S. #188 1879 10¢ Jefferson Type II American Bank Note Printing (Earliest Known Use: October 5, 1878) Postmarked February 8, (1880-1882) in Iowa (city unreadable). This letter took 18 cents to mail. More than likely, the letter contained very important legal documents that needed special handling since the postage rate at the time was 3-cents for 1/2 ounce. In March 1883, the postage rate decreased to 2-cents and a new 2-cent Washington stamp (U.S. #210) was issued in October. Since this cover uses the 2-cent Jackson (U.S. #183), the letter must have been mailed prior to October 1883, but after April 1879 when U.S. #186 Lincoln was released. Our estimated date is 1880-1883.
