January 15, 1839 – Colonel Thomas Cox, a member of the Assembly representing Jackson County, makes a motion to add the words – “to be called Iowa City” – to the original bill. This motion passes in a very close vote (13-to-12), thanks to Scott County’s Laurel Summers.

The original bill to make Johnson County the new location of Iowa’s Territorial capital – was first introduced and approved on January 1, 1839 by Iowa’s First Territorial Legislative Assembly.
