October 23, 1840 – The first issue of The Iowa Standard – Iowa’s sixth newspaper – appears in Bloomington (Muscatine).

The Iowa Standard with William Crum as publisher was quickly followed four days later when The Bloomington Herald began production with Thomas Hughes as publisher. Crum moved The Standard to Iowa City in 1841, renaming it The Iowa City Standard. Hughes relocated to Iowa City as well, but The Bloomington Herald remained until 1849, when it became The Muscatine Journal, which ceased publication in 1890.
