October 4, 1955 – The Davenport Democrat features a bountiful collection of M&M Railroad stories, but, like so many other publications before it, the newspaper incorrectly identifies one popular M&M locomotive from the late 1850’s.
Iowa’s first railroad – the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad – ran its first passenger train into Iowa City on January 3, 1856. Over the next fourteen years, the M&M brought 75 steam locomotives on line, but sadly, none of these beauties have survived to today. The good news is that ten of these classics were photographed before their demise in the 1880’s, and we’ve successfully identified a handful of those ten locomotives here on our website.
