September 29, 1835 – Des Moines (DeMoine) County supervisors convene at William R. Ross home in Burlington.
From 1834 to 1836, the District of Iowa became part of Michigan Territory. The six million acres west of the Mississippi (1833 Black Hawk Purchase) – see map above on left – was divided into two large counties – Dubuque on the north, Des Moines (DeMoine) on the south. Both of these counties had one township each—Julien Township in Dubuque County and Flint Hill Township in Des Moines County.
