This week, the Iowa Hawkeyes begin their 137th football season. The first University of Iowa football game was played on the road in Grinnell, Iowa on November 16, 1889. It was a blustery afternoon, and in the first collegiate football game played west of the Mississippi River, Iowa College beat up on SUI – 24-0.
