August 17, 1933 – The USPS holds a special Second Day of Issue ceremony for the NRA (National Recovery Act) postage stamp in Nira, Iowa.
President Franklin Roosevelt developed a good number of social programs in the early-to-mid 1930’s – all in an attempt to break the stronghold of the Great Depression across America. One such program was the NRA – the National Recovery Administration (Act). Not only is Iowa the first state to receive NRA aid, we also host the release of the 1933 postage stamp that is designed to promote the NRA program! Lots of famous folks have Iowa connections, with a small handful of them having been pictured on U.S. postage stamps! The only prerequisite, sadly, is that you have to be deceased. Take a look at these famous Iowans who made their mark in the world, and here, in one place, is the complete list of U.S. commemorative postage stamps featuring events and locations with Iowa-based themes!
