July 30, 1914 – The Iowa Highway Commission approves the application of the White Pole Auto Club making the “White Pole Road” the the first state-certified auto route in the state.

Up in Iowa City, the north/south Red Ball Route was taking shape across eastern Iowa, and the Iowa State Highway Commission ruled that any new road like the Red Ball Route or the White Pole Road needed to be 26 feet wide with the grade not exceeding 4 percent at any point. The roadway was to be covered with 12 inches of macadam, including a two-inch surface of finely crushed stone.
