July 27, 1854 – Iowa City’s newspaperman of the 1880’s – Herbert S. Fairall – is born in Keysers Ridge, Maryland.

In 1881, Herbert S. Fairall took over the reins of The Iowa City Daily Republican newspaper, and over the next 13 years, became one of the city’s most influential leaders. Writing a best-seller on the subject of Iowa politics, Fairall was chosen to oversee the State of Iowa’s participation with the 1884/1885 World’s Fair held in New Orleans – The World’s Industrial & Cotton Centennial Exposition.
