July 22, 1861 – When the Civil War broke out in April, 1861, the United States Post Office needed to re-design all existing postage stamps so the Confederate States would not be able to use the existing ones. Here is a postal cover from July 22, 1861 that still features the older 3-cent Washington stamp.
