July 16, 1959 – Ads in The Iowa City Press-Citizen tell shoppers about the new state-of-the-art A&P Grocery Store – at 700 South Clinton Street – opening on July 21.
Serving our city since the late 1920’s, A&P Grocery moves from downtown Iowa City, opening its new, state-of-the-art 21,000 sq. ft. facility at 700 South Clinton Street – just one block from the Rock Island Railroad Depot. Over the next 15 years (1959-1974), A&P becomes one of Iowa City’s favorite supermarkets, featuring low prices and high quality Ann Page foods, Plaid Stamps, and Eight-O-Clock Coffee.
