July 6, 2015 – Iowa City historian Tom Schulein presents “History of Iowa City’s Grocery Stores” at the Iowa City Library.

In 1839 – four businessmen applied for city licensing, opening Iowa City’s first dry goods stores. Sixty years later, Iowa City had dozens of neighborhood grocery stores scattered across the community. Selling everything from the basics like coffee, sugar, and flour to meats, milk, bread and other dairy products, these Mom & Pop stores played a vital role in the economic success of our city.
