April 12, 1937 – The Iowa City Press-Citizen announces the death of long-time photographer William H. James, at age 79.
In 1860, the Englishman pioneer – John James – came to Iowa City and started moonlighting with photography. Before long, his two sons – Thomas & William – caught the bug and made photography into their careers – Tom in Des Moines (1870), and William and his wife, Nancy, here in Iowa City (1874). When William opened his photography studio, he picked a prime location – 126 S. Clinton Street – just one block from University Square. Over the next 35 years, James Studio on Clinton Street became the turn-of-the-century place to go in Iowa City for any photographic needs.
