Iowa Newspapers – The Early Years.

March 24, 1838 – James G. Edwards starts the Fort Madison Patriot.

In June of 1839, Edwards relocated to Burlington to bring some head-to-head competition to Clarke – renaming his paper, in the fall of 1839 – The Burlington Hawk-eye. Today, The Hawk-eye is still in publication, billing itself as “Iowa’s oldest newspaper.”
