Herky the Hawk’s Creator – Dick Spencer III

January 16, 1941 – Dick Spencer III – the artist who would later create Herky the Hawk (1948) – is recognized by San Francisco advertisers, even when still an undergrad student at SUI.

In 1948, Richard (Dick) Spencer III – who graduated from SUI in 1943 -created an array of Herky drawings, outfitting his newly beloved character for several sports, including football, baseball, and basketball.

Above is a rare postcard from January 16, 1941 – addressed to Dick Spencer III who was living at the Quad on the SUI campus. It’s a ‘Thank You’ for his artwork which was being used by an advertising agency in San Francisco. Even before his graduation at Iowa, Dick’s artistic talents were at work!
