December 30, 1843 – The Iowa City College – which opened in the fall of 1843 – advertises in The Iowa Capital Reporter.
Still several years before SUI was formed, Iowa City private schools were showing healthy signs of progress, and local educators were encouraging the addition of even more schools of higher learning. Iowa City College – a private Christian school sponsored by the Methodist-Episcopal Church – opened in 1843, but struggled in finding the right man to oversee it. In 1846, this short-lived school – closing by 1848 – invited a new graduate of Indiana Asbury University to come to Iowa City and see what he could do. His name was James Harlan (pictured above).
