December 3, 1908 – The ornate Iowa City Public Fountain – located in the middle of the intersection of Iowa Avenue & Dubuque Street – is pictured on a penny postcard.
Located in the middle of the intersection of Iowa Avenue & Dubuque Street, the Iowa City Public Fountain was built for horses (large watering trough) and five ornate drinking fountains for people! Provided by the Women’s Improvement League in 1905, fraternities used it regularly for hazing and tarnished its reputation. A 1909 offer from the new Iowa City Electric Trolley company moved the fountain to the upper level of City Park – making way for center-of-the-street tracks in its former location.
