October 24, 1852 – Nile Kinnick’s grandfather – George W. Clarke – is born in Indiana.

Nile Kinnick’s grandfather, George W. Clarke, moved to Adel, Iowa after graduating from the SUI Law School in the late 1870’s. Clarke entered local politics and became Iowa’s 21st Governor in 1912, leaving an amazing legacy for Nile Kinnick to follow throughout his life.

1939 was a banner year for Iowa City. Under the leadership of Coach Eddie Anderson and the athleticism of one young man from Adel, Iowa, the Iron Men of Iowa shocked the college football world. As a result, that young man won the Heisman trophy and went on to become a legendary figure in Iowa football – Nile Kinnick.
