September 26, 1912 – The Englert Theatre opens on East Washington Street in Iowa City.
The Englert Theatre – located at 221 E. Washington Street – was constructed at a cost of about $60,000 (equal to $1.5 million today), seated 1,079 patrons, and, when completed, rivaled the finest stage and movie houses throughout the Midwest.
