The Mildred Pelzer Iowa City Murals.

September 6, 1934 – Opening day for Mildred Pelzer’s “Iowa City And Its Past” murals and over the next fifteen years (1934-1949) Pelzer’s artwork is proudly displayed in the lobby of the Jefferson Hotel.

In 1934, Iowa City artist Mildred Pelzer was commissioned by The Jefferson Hotel in downtown Iowa City to create eight 4′ x 12′ murals – all surrounding the historical theme of transportation in Iowa City’s past.

  2. Correction. The Jefferson Hotel was sold to the University in the ‘60s, not ‘70s. I don’t remember exact year, but guess 1965.

  3. Thanks David. I pulled that ‘1970’s’ date from a 2017 PC story – who got that info, I think, from Bob Hibbs who did some pretty extensive research on the Pelzer murals. Wonder where he got his dates?
