Iowa City’s Judge Curtis Bates.

July 24, 1849 – In the spring of 1849, Judge Curtis Bates had a printing press and material hauled from Iowa City to Fort Des Moines on wagons, and on July 24 – with Barlow Granger serving as editor, the first issue of The Iowa Star – Des Moines’ first newspaper – is printed.

The Iowa Star, by the way, eventually evolved into what is today’s Des Moines Register.
