July 15, 1856.

The Meskwaki People – The Sauk and Fox Confederation.

July 15, 1856 – The Iowa General Assembly approves the petition that the Sauk & Fox tribes could return to Iowa.

This move cleared the way, in 1857, for a small number of determined Native Iowans to buy back 80 acres in eastern Iowa, establishing, what is today known as, the Meskwaki Nation in Tama County in East Central Iowa.
