The Great American Postage Stamp Exchange Of 1861.

May 20, 1861 – When the Civil War broke out in April, 1861, the United States Post Office needed to re-design all existing postage stamps so the Confederate States would not be able to use the existing ones. Here is a postal cover from May 20, 1861 that features the new 3-cent Washington stamp.
