March 11, 1858 – Governor Ralph P. Lowe approves the act of the General Assembly whereby Iowa enters upon a pathway of State support for the State University of Iowa.
Up until this time, the “idea” of a state-sponsored university had been approved, but very little had been done to actually make anything happen! With that signature, the Iowa Legislature appropriated $3,000 for the repair and modification of the old capitol building, and $10,000 for the erection of a boarding house, now known as South Hall.
