February 22, 1854 – The Chicago & Rock Island Railroad (C&RI) becomes the first railroad to link the Atlantic coast with the Mississippi River, completing its line from Chicago to Rock Island.
Less than two years later – in 1856 – the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad will join with the C&RI to bring the railroad into Iowa City!
