Iowa City Neighborhood Grocery Stores -1933.

In one of his newspaper columns, published by The Iowa City Press-Citizen in 1986, Iowa City historian Irving Weber took his readers back to 1933 in order to re-visit Iowa City’s neighborhood grocery stores. According to Weber’s report, our community of 15,340 residents had 41 different grocers to choose from. Come check out these Ma and Pa shops with us, and be sure to bring your shopping bag!

  1. I had Iowa City on My Coca Cola route in the 1980s. I worked for Coke when Whiteway’s burned out leaving John’s as the only true downtown neighborhood grocery store. My brother Don Canfield managed the HY Vee at 1st Avenue and Rochester before moving to the Hollywood store where he retired from. I am retired living in Hot Springs, Arkansas now but I will always consider the Cedar Rapids and Iowas City area my home.
