In 1901, when Jacob E. Reizenstein took over as the city editor at The Daily Iowa State Press, he was well-known by most Iowa Citians since he had served as the editor of The Iowa City Republican for thirteen years.

Jake was a long-time friend of my grandparents. At Christmas time, he and his wife went to NYC and engaged in a theater-going orgy. During those visits he would mail my grandmother a penny postcard on which he had written a verse where each line started with a letter of the greeting, “Merry Christmas”. I used to run into him near the old Electrical Engineering Building when I was in grad school (1958 to ‘59); very short in stature, very polite, dressed all in black.
