In 1860, the brand-new Republican Party nominated a young statesman from Illinois named Lincoln – desiring a leader who would stand for social justice and racial equality. Surrounding Honest Abe’s campaign were thousands of young people who were defined as Wide Awakes. Today, the term ‘woke’ has now become a slam against those who are seemingly trying to do the same.
