Page I9 – Two Bicentennial-themed articles on this page – the first, by Linda Muston covers the 1876 Centennial celebrations in Iowa City, followed by a brief look at the sesquicentennial celebrations in 1926. The second, by Johanna N. Beers, tells the story of Johnson County pioneer families: the Fellows and Dennis families – and their connection to the Revolutionary War.
Page I11 – Dale Hankins offers two stories of pioneer families who played major roles in the construction of Iowa’s capitol building in Iowa City – today’s Old Capitol. On the left (below), we have the story of Robert Lucas – Iowa’s first Territorial Governor – and his family. On the right (below), we have the story of Wolfgang & Katherine Rohret and family – who came to Johnson County around 1841. Rohret and his sons were involved with several construction projects in Johnson County, including the development of the Military Road from Dubuque to Iowa City.
